December is HIV/AIDS Awareness Month, where people show support to those living with HIV and remember those who have died from AIDS. HIV impacts over 39 million people globally and still carries a negative stigma; however, many people with the disease are now able to live long and healthy lives.
AIDS and the fashion industry are inextricably linked, as multiple fashion houses have been hit hard by the disease in the past. Similarly, many designers, brands, and other industry professionals have brought awareness to the AIDS crisis over the years. There are still many prominent figures in the fashion industry living with HIV, and many have forged lasting legacies regardless of their diagnoses.
MAC
MAC’s Viva Glam collection launched in 1994, and the brand has continued to put out signature lipsticks to support those affected by HIV/AIDS ever since. The campaign has raised over $500,000,000 globally, and every dollar you spend goes directly to women, girls, and LGBTQIA+ people living with AIDS. There are currently two shades available on the website.
Mondo Guerra
Mondo Guerra is an American fashion designer who first appeared on season 8 of Project Runway and went on to win the first Project Runway All-Stars season. His designs are all about celebrating individuality with color and print. Guerra revealed his HIV-positive diagnosis on Project Runway season 8, inspiring viewers with his authenticity and bravery.
Margiela
Margiela was one of the first fashion houses to partner with an AIDS charity. Over 25 years ago, Margiela launched a graphic tee with the statement, “There is more action to be done to fight AIDS than wear this t-shirt but it’s a good start” as part of their AW94 collection. The brand has continued to put out these shirts annually, and the profits go to the French organization AIDES.
Keith Haring
Keith Haring was a prominent artist who emerged out of New York City’s graffiti culture of the 1980s. His art is still featured in pieces by Adidas and Uniqlo, a testament to his timelessly funky art style. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, and only one year later, he started the Keith Haring Foundation to raise funding for AIDS organizations and children’s programs. Keith passed away from AIDS in 1990, but his legacy remains as powerful as ever.
How will you raise awareness during HIV/AIDS Awareness Month?
