On Tuesday, September 12, Kabasia made its New York Fashion Week debut at DUMBO House with a presentation of the brand’s new Spring 2024 collection entitled, “Installment II: Conditions of Childhood.” Founder and designer Morgan Ogryzek was inspired by the youthfulness of her childhood while adding hints of maturity and adulthood.

To help bring Ogryzek’s vision to life, she, of course, needed the help of the stylists, including hair, makeup, nails, and jewelry. Here’s what happened behind the scenes of the Kabasia presentation.

Hair

To achieve the youthfulness needed to execute Ogryzek’s vision, hair lead Mike Martinez spent a lot of time creating frizz in the models’ hair, adding texture where it might not usually be in order to create the idea that children often run around and play without caring about their hair.

With the added texture, this look results in a lot of hair that is in front of the face. In order to be mindful of the makeup that the models wear, Martinez makes sure to clip hair pieces back before adding that extra texture. “[I] try to be very wary of what’s going to save them some time because they don’t have to redo it,” he said.

Martinez also is the Creative Director of Cutler Salon.

Makeup

Makeup lead T. Cooper opted for a fresh makeup look this season to emulate youth. Again in line with Ogryzek’s vision, Cooper created looks that made for glowing skin with a child-like quality and pops of maturity. “It’s like it’s a kid, but then add an element or two to make it grown whether it’s doll-like lashes, whether it’s a little bit of a stronger lip, whether it’s a little bit more blush or more color on the eyes,” she said.

Cooper’s makeup look was sponsored by Ardell Lashes and Dieux Skincare. She really spent effort prepping the models’ skin using Dieux’s Angel Eyes Dieux pack and their serums. “If you have a nice, hydrated face that’s already glowing, the makeup has no choice but to look gorgeous,” Cooper said. “Good makeup starts with good skincare.”

Nails

Joelle Rodriguez, creative director of Crown Jewel Nails, was really inspired by Ogryzek’s collection. “I loved how vibrant it was and how much it played the texture,” she said. “I was also inspired by the 3D trends that have been taking over the nail sphere lately, so I wanted to include some of that.”

Initially, Ogryzek wanted simple nude nails for the models in her presentation. Yet, after seeing Rodriguez’s ideas for incorporating more detail in the nails, the nail design changed to add more three-dimensional detailing. “The collection is really fun. It plays with textures, it plays with colors, and I just really wanted that to be highlighted,” Rodriguez said.

This year, Rodriguez was sponsored by LeChat. “They really do care about integrity when it comes to their products, always having innovation, always having good quality products,” she said.

Jewelry

Making her fashion show and New York Fashion Week debut, jewelry designer Delia Langan kept her jewelry simple for Ogryzek’s collection. Her hand-made pieces comprised of gold and silver rings, bracelets, and necklaces. Both she and Ogryzek base their companies out of Brooklyn, New York.

“I style and photograph all my own shoots,” Langan said. “It’s actually nice having someone make the final decision or be in charge for once. She’s done some really cool stuff that I wouldn’t have picked myself.” While styling gold and silver jewelry is usually based on skin tone, that wasn’t the case for this show. “For these looks, it’s based on whatever Kabasia outfit is going on. It’s kind of instinctual,” she said.
