Son Jung Wan is one of the top-selling female designers from Seoul. Her global brand features women’s, men’s, juniors, and golf athleisure collections. Known for her timeless and futuristic aesthetic, Wan continuously creates innovative designs that are endlessly exciting. To kick off NYFW, the designer showcased her upcoming FW ’25 collection, “Go With The Flow,” on February 8th at the IAC Building in the chic neighborhood of Chelsea in Manhattan.
To set the show’s tone, the first looks to hit the runway were various shades of bright pink. The bold color scheme was prominent throughout the looks, with pastel yellow, shamrock green, and midnight blue all in use. Reoccurring silhouettes such as the peplum, puff sleeves, and bubble hem created a feminine yet retro theme, turning traditional styles into something new. Oversized and asymmetrical pieces had an avant-garde touch; others were structured and form fitting. The puffy and exaggerated shapes made the imagination picture moving clouds on a quiet, sunny day. Balanced against the silhouettes, specific models had their hair styled in a slick back ponytail maneuvered into a bow.
All in all, standout pieces included the two black-and-white dresses that flowed with lots of flower appliques. The first dress had exaggerated shoulders and a fitted bodice, while the second had a turtleneck and a more relaxed fit. At this point, the audience was left feeling lighthearted, playful, and ready to let it be.
Post show, I had the pleasure of interviewing the designer.
Was there a specific period or place that inspired you most for your most recent collection?
For inspiration this season, I explored the past two memories and identities through the range of the present. I branded traditional elements and contemporary aesthetics to create an avant-garde sensibility collection with experimental and innovative designs.
What message do you want to communicate to your audience with this collection?
Just loving life. Love life, and enjoy being together.
Who do you have in mind when creating designs?
I love movie stars, artists, and painters. They all give me lots of inspiration.
Do you have a favorite painter?
Nowadays, I love Jackson Pollock.
What is your creative process like for brainstorming designs and new collections?
First, I select the material I want to use for the collection. Then, I will create the designs by sketching.
