How Fashion Pays Tribute to Juneteenth

Juneteenth has grown into a powerful celebration of freedom and cultural heritage. Marking the end of slavery in the U.S., it’s also a time to honor African traditions and history. All across the country, fashion has become a powerful form of self-expression for celebrating Juneteenth and educating others about its meaning. Here are a few ways that fashion pays tribute to Juneteenth.

Prints, Patterns & Palettes

Cultural colors and bold prints are common elements in Juneteenth attire. The colors red, black, and green (found in the Pan-African flag) each symbolize a part of the fight for freedom. African-inspired prints and patterns, including the Pan-African flag, often feature in celebratory outfits. Mixing tradition with trends, fabrics like Ankara and Kente bring bold color and cultural flair to modern designs. In 2024, singer Lizzo wore a Juneteenth-inspired outfit to spread awareness and take action.

Self-Expressive Styles

Under the Slave Codes, enslaved individuals were restricted on what they could and could not wear. These codes were put in place as a means of control and dehumanization, often limiting them to uncomfortable, oppressive clothing. Today, people wear self-expressive attire to honor their ancestors and celebrate liberation. One of my personal favorites is when model Choyce Brown posted photos on Instagram in stylish clothing and expressive, long nails.

Wearing the Message

Nowadays, you can find t-shirts with just about anything on them. In this case, catchy messages and vibrant graphics empower and unify the community. Many fashion brands, like sports brand Round 21, launched their Juneteenth collections last year in anticipation of the holiday. From images of African leaders to historical quotes, fashion is making a statement.

Supporting Black-Owned Fashionistas

Looking for new designers or beauty products? Back in 2023, Beyoncé wore exclusively Black designers on her Renaissance tour to support Black fashionistas. This is a great example of how icons use their platform to elevate and celebrate Black talent. Discover and support the many unique Black-owned businesses making an impact this holiday. Keep an eye out for black-owned brands in your community; you may even find one of your new favorite spots. It’s important to remember and honor significant moments in history. Use this June 19th to make a statement and spread the holiday’s message.
