Located in the Mercedes-Benz of Manhattan, New York Men’s Day held a morning and afternoon showcase featuring emerging brands specializing in contemporary men’s apparel. I had the pleasure of attending the morning showcase, which featured four brands- Archie, Clara Son, Peak Lapel, and Oxblood Zebra. Guests arriving at the venue entered through the Maybach Lounge and were then guided to the long hallway against large windows that displayed each of the four brands’ spring and summer collections. Exemplifying menswear that not only stands out but tells a story, these NYC-based designers are sure to catch your eye.

Clara Son debuted their ‘’Reset’’ collection in a mock bedroom set, where models roamed and posed in front of a full-length mirror. The menswear line played with surrealist looks and unique silhouettes that featured fabricated bows, pleats, and layering of structured fabrics. Son’s website expresses, ‘’Embracing constant evolution, Clara Son stays true to its core principles: the artful articulation of potent narratives through unwavering visual authenticity.’’ The aesthetics are elegant, minimal, often oversized or relaxed in silhouette, but never simple. There are structured pieces, textural contrasts (knits vs more rigid fabrics), utilitarian touches (pockets, outerwear), and a color palette that leans toward neutrals while occasionally integrating richer tones.

The clothing line was launched in 2020 by Clara Son, a South Korean menswear designer who studied BFA fashion design at Parsons. Son aims to illustrate transformative experiences through minimalistic clothing that defies gender constructs.

The brand intentionally challenges traditional gender norms in menswear, employing designs that don’t strictly adhere to masculine expectations. Pieces are often created with geometry, proportion, and garment function in mind, rather than gendered tropes. Son’s translation of these ideas into their designs flows seamlessly and pushes for an untraditional way of viewing
clothing and, further, identity.
