Culture and Couture Combine at the China Institute’s Fashion Night

On Sunday, September 14, the China Institute in America hosted a special New York Fashion Week night for the first show of the China Institute Fashion Week. An organization that bridges connections between the East and the West, they chose to do that night through the medium of fashion. Three designers showcased their work—keep scrolling to hear our thoughts!

Sandriver Cashmere

Juliet Guo founded Sandriver Cashmere after spending over 35 years in the cashmere business. Based in Mongolia, Guo’s cashmere production is both sustainable and top-tier, using only the best cashmere fibers and employing herdsmen from her own community. The season’s collection featured pieces made of quality cashmere, with patterns inspired by Guo’s home in Mongolia and the peaks of Tibet.

Yinan New York

Founded by Anna Zhou in Midtown, Manhattan, Yinan New York is both a ready-to-wear and couture brand. Zhou specifically chose the name Yinan because it’s her given name. The first Chinese designer on Project Runway seasons 19 and 20, Zhou’s artistry is shaped by her father, who was a sculptor, and her own fine arts training when she was 13 years old. Her collection demonstrates the blend you can have with traditional ready-to-wear and couture types of clothes, seamlessly integrating elements of the two types of pieces.

Lanyu Couture

Nicknamed “The Chinese Queen of Couture Wedding Dresses” by Chinese media, Lanyu and her eponymous couture brand are a blend of romance and heritage. One trademark of her designs is that she includes traditional Suzhou embroidery in her pieces, which most definitely came to life in the collection she presented on the runway. From gorgeous dresses to bright colors, it’s clear why she has such an honored title among the Chinese.
