Neon Eyelids and Graphic Liner at Edwing D’Angelo

The Edwing D’Angelo’s New York Fashion Week show was unlike any other show this season. It hadn’t taken place at a large venue downtown but on the streets of Harlem where his store is located. Dedicated to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, D’Angelo’s show was solely intended for the people of New York City. The models walked down the uptown sidewalk as if it were a runway, all while the DJ spun hip-hop’s greatest hits. It was a celebration of legends such as Slick Rick and MC Lyte.

An intense makeup look was needed in order to match the vibrance and energy of Edwing’s pieces. Makeup industry veteran, Ashunta Sheriff, was brought on as a key makeup artist.

In addition to being the beauty editor for XOXO Fashion Magazine, I am also a working artist. I consider myself lucky to have been on Ashunta’s team. Since the opportunity had presented itself, I thought it would be inspiring to ask her a few questions about the look she had created, and she happily obliged.

Ashunta stated that the graphic liner with a pop of color was decided upon after a conversation with the designer. Although the collection was inspired by the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, they also wanted to make it a bit futuristic.

“We went for a really groomed, laminated brow using BROWZING from Ashunta Sheriff Beauty, flawless skin, and glowing cheeks with a lot of highlights – which is what I’m known for,” she said.

In order to make sure that all makeup artists created the same cohesive look, they used Ashunta Sheriff Beauty, Ardell Lashes, and Danessa Myricks Color Fix. When I asked Ashunta what she would consider the hero product of the look, she immediately retorted “Our [Ashunta Sheriff Beauty] Thermal Blush, that’s all over TikTok!”.

I can confirm firsthand that the blush is amazing. It looks different on every person because it adjusts to your pH and body temperature.

The overall look gave an ultramodern street-style vibe, and all the models looked incredible. This was my last show for the season, it was nice to have ended on a high note. I learned so much working with Ashunta, she is truly a class act.
