Bibhu Mohapatra brought the vibrancy of spring, with leaves falling around us, in his Spring 2027 collection. Inspired by iconic Italian heiress Marchesa Luisa Casati, Mohapatra used lace, feathers, and sequins to create wearable pieces of art.
The designer sources materials from around the globe, bringing together an eclectic mix of everything from leather to silk. While he uses many colors, the shade range of his pieces is balanced and not too loud. Mohapatra mastered eccentricity without sacrificing the mastery of his silhouettes.
An off-white dress adorned with silver vine embroidery stood out on the runway. The skirt’s lines move diagonally, while the top portion features silver vines creeping up to the neck and shoulders. Its patterns and feathered accents complement the 70s silhouette. Mustard yellow appeared throughout the show. While sometimes very subtly incorporated, a daring monochromatic dress used the same silver embroidery and peasant sleeves to create an elongating silhouette. A flower-and-feather cluster at the side of the neck added asymmetry that kept the look fun.
Mohapatra also created plenty of neutral looks. From dusty roses to black gowns adorned with paillettes, his pieces were dynamic without crossing the line into absurdity. One lace dress featured tiered feather trim around the hips and ankles, all in the dusty rose hue. It draws the eye to the wearer, but the simple cut and sheer lace allow the body itself to serve as the fashion statement.
Bibhu Mohapatra doesn’t fall into the season’s microtrends. His collection remains classic, pairing tried-and-true shapes with fresh patterns and textures to create a show with joie de vivre in every look.
