Have you ever considered getting a wig, but felt a little overwhelmed by all of the options? Don’t worry, we’ve got you. We spoke to a few industry experts about choosing the right unit, so you don’t have to. Selecting the right wig can be a bit tricky, but the pros have given their tips to guide you through this intimidating process. Let’s dive in!
First off, think about why you want to purchase a wig. Are you looking for a wig for fashion purposes, a special occasion, or perhaps to cope with hair loss? Understanding your goals will help narrow down your options and focus on what’s most important to you. Film and television hairstylist, Roshawn Bryant-Middleton, says “You should know what you are wearing the wig for. Is it a temporary look or do you plan on wearing this wig every day? If you are just looking to do something different, then I would suggest a synthetic [wig] – make no mistake, these are not the same synthetic wigs your grandmother used to wear. There are some quality synthetic wigs out there! You can also use the synthetic wigs to see if you want to invest in a human hair wig. Before you decide to live the wig life please do your homework, so you can make the best choice for yourself.”
Celebrity hairstylist, Lurissa Ingrid, says it’s all about the lace. According to Lawson, “Choosing the best wig starts with the right lace. I suggest HD or film lace for a flawless melt. Also, look for wigs [with] small to fine knots to make it undetectable.” Lace front wigs are a popular choice for anyone who’s looking to change up their hairstyle quickly and easily. Roshawn Bryant-Middleton also had some valuable advice regarding the topic of lace. “Lace fronts are required to be glued down, so if that’s not your thing then there are glueless wigs, which doesn’t require glue or adhesive, they usually just have lace on the top”, says Bryant-Middleton.
Hair industry veteran, Andrea Wilson, is a hair extension specialist. Many of her clients are mature women, so she was able to give some tips about their specific needs when selecting a unit. Wilson says, “When mature women decide to select a wig, it’s essential to keep three key factors in mind, known as TLC: texture, length, and color. It’s crucial to opt for a texture that suits you, a manageable length, and a color that complements your style. Whether you choose human or synthetic hair, remember that the wig should enhance your look, not overpower it.”
Choosing the correct wig for you may take some time and experimentation. Don’t be afraid to try different styles, colors, and types until you find the one that makes you feel confident and beautiful. Keeping an open mind and being patient with the process will make the journey more enjoyable. I hope these pro tips help you in selecting the perfect wig for your needs. Good luck, besties!
