Altuzarra’s Spring 2024 Collection: A Nostalgic Ode to 50s/60s Realism

On Monday, September 11th, Joseph Altuzarra unveiled his Spring 2024 Ready-to-Wear collection at the New York Public Library, leaving us with much to ponder. Since the brand’s launch in 2008, Altuzarra has cultivated a reputation for seamlessly blending elements of bohemian with tie-dye patterns, embracing both the natural and the extravagant, all within an old-money, feminine, and daringly chic aesthetic. This unique aesthetic has been widely embraced by numerous celebrities including Rihanna, Meghan Markle, and Nicole Kidman proudly showcasing their affinity for the brand and the designer.

Moreover, the celebrities in attendance perfectly embodied the essence of the brand. With Lucy Hale, model Camila McConaughey, or Nicky Hilton donning vibrant colors and tie-dye patterns, they effortlessly encapsulated the bohemian style Altuzarra is renowned for.

However, with this collection Altuzarra truly caught us off guard.

With a total of 56 looks showcased in this Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Altuzarra drew inspiration from the French New Wave cinematic movement and psychological horror film Roman Polanski’s “Rosemary’s Baby.” Raised in Paris by a Chinese American mother and a French father, Altuzarra often infuses his Franco-American background and his passion for literature, film, and dance into his creations. This collection is a testament to that fusion. The collection exuded a 1950s/1960s French conservatism allure, but with a contemporary twist. Featuring baby-doll dresses, dark color palettes, trapeze dresses, pencil skirts, sweater sets, and the standout pieces—coats, presented in satin textures—he artfully combined elegance with a darker, more grounded realism.

Embracing natural beauty as a central theme, models were provided with a “done undone” look, embracing a genuine realism that celebrates natural beauty in all its diverse forms, shapes, and shades.

Altuzarra has for this collection managed to really get us intrigued. And we’ll be looking for more surprises in the future that is certain !

In the meantime, you can watch the full show on their website.
