Betsey Johnson is an eccentric American fashion designer known for her flamboyant looks. Johnson was diagnosed in 2000 after finding an issue with her breast implant. After the discovery, she dealt with the findings privately for months. However, after seeing how much the fashion industry supported breast cancer awareness, Johnson decided to kick off the following fashion week by telling her story at the opening ceremony. Now, 23 years later, Betsey advocates for breast cancer awareness and urges women to get mammograms regularly.
Linda Evangelista
Linda Evangelista is a Canadian supermodel and considered one of the most influential models of all time. She has been modeling since 1984 and has over 700 magazine covers to show for it. Evangelista was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018. Despite the odds being against her, and after two operations, she remains determined that breast cancer will not kill her. As of now, she is enjoying being cancer-free.
Dana Donofree
AnaOno founder Dana Donofree was diagnosed with breast cancer in her twenties. After undergoing a mastectomy and reconstruction surgery, Donofree realized that there was no intimatewear made to fit women going through breast cancer treatment. This inspired her to create her brand AnaOno, specializing in lingerie made to fit every body-type. Donofree is also active in various nonprofits including Living Beyond Breast Cancer, Metavivor, and The Breasties.
Mathew Knowles
Yes, men can get breast cancer too. Mathew Knowles is a music producer, and, most notably, the father of Beyoncé and Solange Knowles. He was diagnosed in 2019 with stage 1A breast cancer. After undergoing a mastectomy, he learned he had the BRCA2 gene mutation, putting him at a higher risk for breast and other types of cancers. Now that he is cancer-free. He uses his experience to raise awareness about male breast cancer, which, while rare, affects Black men disproportionately more compared to white men.
