Dark alleyways are known to be pathways for danger, and we are taught that avoiding them sustains the boundaries between us and the creatures that lurk under dim street lights. Custo Barcelona transformed the sliver of space beside the Walker Hotel into a glimmering fashion show, with three rows of patrons buzzing with anticipation ahead of the Spanish designer’s new collection. Flouncy skirts and playful t-shirts bounced across the makeshift runway for the night, breathing a new vibrancy into the alleyways that are typically cautiously avoided.

Custo Barcelona came to fruition when two Spanish brothers were inspired by Californian fashion. Custo’s newest collection does not stray from the original style ethos. Their SS25 drop was funky and colorful, bringing an early 2010s energy back to a fashion world that has become generally sleek and monotone. Playful prints, metallic fabrics, feminine ruffles, and flowy cuts had the audience audibly approve of the collection with their gasps and cheers.

Custo chose printed t-shirts sporting gorillas on bicycles, polar bears on motorcycles, buffalos wearing sunglasses, and a woman with a head full of rollers wearing a shirt saying, “My hairdresser is rich.” The fashion from this show does not take itself too seriously, and many shirts read “Custo We Art” with sayings such as “Your Freedom” or “Wildlife” following the slogan. However, whether or not the designs made it visibly clear that the designer created it, every clothing item had the unapologetic groovy motif that only a Custo Barcelona design could boast.
