2025 Fashion Trend Predictions—And Where They Started

The only thing I find equally exciting as Spotify Wrapped is the predictions for yearly fashion trends. It is a fun way to start the new year, as we all get to watch how these interesting trends unfold–whether they do or don’t hit the mainstream. In 2025, trends will rise in 70s and 80s fashion with nostalgia, futurism, and functionality. Here is a list of 6 trends I believe will have the most significant impact.

1. Bubble Hems

The bubble hem has popped in and out of fashion for decades. Originating in the 1950s, the look was known for its nipped waist, full skirt, and voluminous bubble shape. This era was all about femininity and glamour, with Christian Dior creating the silhouette of the time. Another resurgence appeared in the 1980s when exaggerated shapes became popular once again.

The trend spread rapidly in the Summer of 2024, and the bubble hems were everywhere. This year, we will continue to see the look expand to skirts and dresses of all lengths. The unique shape adds a fun, flowy, and playful element to any outfit. And many options exist since the trend has been bubbling up for some time. Whether you want something casual or a bold statement piece, you will find something that works for you.

2. Suede

Suede is said to be everyone’s favorite fabric of 2025. Looking back to the 60s and 70s, the material began breaking into mainstream fashion. The rebellious nature of the 60s introduced suede to the mini skirt, a staple for the youth. Trickling into the 70s, suede crept onto fringe jackets, platform shoes, and dresses.

This year, we will continue to see the fabric’s versatility on all garments. Everything from suede bags to blazers, skirts, and shoes will be hard to miss. Suede matching sets will also rise for those who love a monochromatic look. There are many ways to mix suede into your wardrobe, and the luxury fabric is timeless.

Pro tip: Suede should not be worn in the rain. The fabric is not water resistant and can become damaged when wet, possibly leaving permanent stains.

3. Hot Pants

Every generation has their rendition of the short-shorts. In the 1970s disco era, hot pants were a staple for fashion risk-takers. The shorts were made of satin or polyester and would be worn with pantyhose. This year, the vintage hot pants return in full swing.

Extending on the “no pants” trend of 2024, we will continue to see hemlines getting shorter. The shorts will have an elevated look with the use of high-quality fabrics. Expect to see leather, knit, tweed, and sequin fabrics. Hailey Bieber and Sophie Turner have styled the look in a polished and elegant manner, setting the stage for the trend. The look can be worn to the club with a blazer or in 70s fashion.

4. Maximalism

There seems to be a constant battle between maximal and minimal fashion styles. Which one will take center stage this year? Maximalism is predicted to headline, but we will still see the minimal, quiet luxury trends in fashionistas. Following the rise of 80s fashion this year, it is only natural that big accessories and bold patterns come with it.

Speaking of big accessories, removing your bag charms is unnecessary; they are here to stay. We will continue to see the outward expression of personality with charms and the embracement of making something your own. Following the layering of bag charms, we will start to see clothing and accessories being layered. Don’t be afraid to wear one, two, or three necklaces. Get creative with it! Test out some new patterns or attempt that bold makeup look. In true 80s fashion, nothing is off-limits!

5. Retro Sportswear

Sportswear will be trending again in 2025 but with a retro twist. The casual, laid-back nature of the attire is nothing new. What was once strictly golf attire in the 1920s turned into everyday attire in the 1970s. Last year, we saw the boom of blokecore, which turned vintage European football jerseys into everyday wear. What’s next?

There will be a movement towards 80s windbreakers in cute, pastel colors. The suede sneakers at the end of 2024, most notably by Miu Miu, will make their way onto the streets. Brands like Nike and Adidas will continue to push nostalgic designs through retro jerseys and vintage sneakers. Keep an eye out for creative streetwear looks that combine style and sport.

6. Skinny Jeans

What is more polarizing than skinny jeans? The piece has comedically created a rift between Gen Z and millennials, with Gen Z opposing the skinny jeans look. That may change this year, with skinny jeans forecasted as a favored denim trend in 2025.

Skinny jeans can be easily dressed up or down and are great for everyday wear. Style them with a knee-high boot for a special occasion or with sneakers when running errands for the day. You cannot go wrong with any style of denim, as the garment will last longer than any trend. It may be worth investing in a pair of skinny jeans this year.

Trends go in and out of style, but one thing never does: personal style. Whether you choose to try out these new looks or not, think about your pieces’ longevity, you may even be surprised that some of these trends are hiding in your closet!

XOXO,

Your Fashion Bestie
