Healthy Skincare Tips for Cool Weather

Cooler weather typically has harsh effects on our skin. So, updating our skincare routines to match the weather changes is important. Here are a few tips to ensure your skin stays hydrated throughout the fall and winter.

Swap Out Moisturizers

The first and maybe the most obvious tip is to moisturize your skin. Instead of using lotions you may have been using for summer, use thick moisturizing creams daily to keep the skin soft and hydrated. Cold weather tends to dry the skin more, so swapping out your moisturizer for a fragrance-free cream or petroleum-based moisturizer is the best fit.

Use Lip Balms

Dry skin also comes with dry lips, which are never comfortable. Protective and nourishing lip balms are great for preventing dry, cracked lips. Once you find your favorite lip balm, don’t forget to throw it in your purse and take it around with you everywhere, as it may come off frequently.

Switch to Hydrating Cleansers

Over-cleansing during cold weather may dry out our skin even more, as it diminishes our natural moisturizers. Switching to a hydrating cleanser protects your skin’s moisture and overall barrier by ensuring hydration. Look for hydrating cleansers with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, squalene, ceramides, and niacinamide.

Use a Humidifier

Use a humidifier in your home or bedroom to combat the dryness of cold weather. Humidifiers contribute to air quality and the overall glow and health of the skin by adding moisture. You can easily add a humidifier to your nighttime skincare routine, as you can sleep comfortably with your humidifier on.

Keep Up With Sunscreen

It is a common misconception that we do not need sunscreen during cold months. However, we are exposed to the sun’s rays, even in cool weather. So, keep up with sunscreen and incorporate an SPF of at least 30 in your routine.

Gently Exfoliate

Using gentle exfoliators during cold months is beneficial for getting rid of dry flakes and dead skin cells. Incorporating gentle exfoliants helps with moisturizer absorption. However, it is essential not to overexfoliate since it may cause skin irritation and dryness. So, consider how dry or oily your skin is before deciding how many times a week to exfoliate.

Keeping our skin moisturized and hydrated during cold weather is important to our health. These are just a few precautions to prevent our skin from drying out during these times. Protect your skin from the cold weather using some of these tips in your skincare routine!
