Places I Visited In Puerto Rico

Last summer, I went to the Caribbean with my family for the first time. I’ve traveled very little outside of mainland USA, so I was excited to expand my horizons and explore a new territory, the beautiful island of Puerto Rico!

Earlier this summer, we set our sights on the capital, San Juan. So, on a fateful summer evening, we hopped on a plane to arrive at our destination. After a several-hour-long plane ride, we made it to the Island of Enchantment, where we rested for the night only to explore the city the next day.

I was pleasantly surprised by the mesmerizing Puerto Rican landscapes and sites throughout San Juan. We relaxed under the sun, walked through the colorful streets of Old San Juan, explored historical buildings, and more. The following are some of the beautiful spots we enjoyed there.

Isla Verde Beach

The island’s northern coast contains a tropical sunny spot called Isla Verde Beach, near several hotels and the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport. With its crystal blue sea and dancing palm trees, it would become one of the most memorable seasides I would ever visit. I loved swimming in the warm ocean, which was quite different from the cold waters I’m used to in the Northeast (U.S.A.).

“El Morro” and Castillo San Cristobal

We visited its popular antique sites while traveling through Viejo San Juan, the capital’s most historical region. Castillo San Felipe del Morro, aka “El Morro,” and Castillo San Cristobal were fortresses built centuries ago as defenses to protect the island. Walking through these structures was an exciting experience. I looked out into the sea from the top of the fortresses and traversed dark underground tunnels, absorbing the ancient architecture and giving me a glimpse of a time marked by challenge and strife.

La Puerta de San Juan Gate

Another captivating historical landmark located by the seaside is the San Juan Gate. You can walk by the old Boricua walls and gates and enjoy the mesmerizing surrounding views. Watching the boats sailing in the sea, the waves crashing onto the shore rocks, and feeling the warm breeze as I walked along the long path made this a delightful, serene experience.

I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to explore some fantastic scenes in Puerto Rico’s capital. The city had numerous hotels close to restaurants offering delicious food and was all right next to clean and accessible public transportation. Even though the island is a U.S. territory, I still found it alleviated my foreign travel itch since I saw distinct places that differed from what I was used to.

I love how Puerto Rico is a melting point of American and Latin culture, and I admire how many friendly people here use their Spanglish speaking skills! If you are looking for your next vacation spot and aren’t sure where to go, consider La Isla del Encanto, a hotspot of beautiful tropical beaches and rich historical time capsules that make unique viewing experiences.
