We’re all familiar with models’ walks, but what’s more nuanced is how a model’s walk does much more than show off a designer’s pieces. A model’s walk sets them apart on the runway and separates good models from great ones.
With a simple sway of the hips or swing of the arms, a model can convey a whole array of emotions during a single strut down the runway. Now that New York Fashion Week is over, we have a whole new batch of models to admire, but how do these models compare to the 1990s supers? Let’s discuss.
1990s
It is no doubt that the ’90s are considered the golden age for models, and there’s a good reason why. ’90s catwalks are bouncy yet sharp, perfectly capturing the spunky and chic playfulness of the era.
Models have wide arm movements, usually with hands on their hips or swinging wildly at their sides. Movements in the hips are precise, resembling more of a bounce or pop as opposed to a sway. Models’ walks also emphasized their long, thin legs, the beauty standard of the time.
Supermodels from this era include Christy Turlington, Tyra Banks, Carla Bruni, and Helena Christensen. These women are the embodiment of the ’90s walk, visible in Helena walking for Prada, Christy for Anna Sui, and Tyra and Carla for Todd Oldham. You can view the video compilation of their walks here.
2023
There are many elements of the modern model’s walk that are similar to the ’90s. After all, modern models certainly look up to the supers that came before them for inspiration! However, just like the fashion industry as a whole, modern walks have evolved to represent shifting societal attitudes.
As beauty standards become less rigid and ideas surrounding perfection are challenged, models walk with more sway and looseness, even occasional clunkiness. This brings a more relaxed and cool feel to runways that were rarely seen in the 1990s.
Models also walk with solemn, stern faces as opposed to the shining smiles of ’90s models, responding to the increased disillusionment and desire for social change many young people are facing.
Some of the standout models in 2023 include Mona Tougaard, Ida Heiner, Sacha Quenby, and Sora Choi. You can watch their walks here.
