Sometimes, we get carried away when packing our bags for vacation or the holidays. I’m no exception-I’ve been guilty of overpacking and have to continuously remove items from my bag to make sure my luggage isn’t too heavy. In my attempts to change my ways and start packing light, I found some helpful tips and decided to share them with anyone who struggles with this problem.

Choose the Right Bag

Depending on the length of your trip, using the correct bag can make all the difference. If you plan a short trip, a small bag, such as a carry-on, would be more convenient. A big suitcase may not be necessary for longer trips, especially if traveling to multiple destinations.

Pack the Basics

Pack essentials only and limit the number of each item you bring—for instance, six shirts, three pairs of pants, one jacket. Although you may not have your entire closet, the good thing about clothes is that they can be washed, mixed, and matched to create different outfits. Ditch the “what ifs” and focus only on your needs.

Get Compression Packing Cubes

Compression packing cubes are great for organizing and maximizing luggage space. They help keep everything in place and eliminate wasted space, allowing for more room in your suitcase.

Use Mini-Sized Toiletries

Because of their bulk, full-size bottles and products can take up a lot of weight and space in toiletries. Instead, invest in mini toiletries or small, empty containers to pour your products into. Stick to the essential toiletries to avoid overpacking. Convenience Kits International offers a range of travel-sized kits to make packing easier.

Wear Bulky Items on a Plane

Rather than packing bulky clothing in your suitcase, wear it on the plane. Items like sweatshirts or sweatpants take up a lot of space, so layering when choosing your airport outfit can be beneficial. You can also use a stuffable travel pillow like these on Amazon. Most stuffable travel pillows can hold up to 3 days’ worth of clothing, helping you reduce your luggage weight while providing neck support.

Making a packing list and using a luggage scale are two other things to keep in mind when packing light for a trip.

I hope these tips have been helpful and relieved some of that packing stress for your next trip!
