Women dominating the big screen never fails to uplift and empower other women. Through the art of film and storytelling, the tales of many women have been shared with the world. In celebration of Women’s History Month, let’s take a look at some movies and TV shows that feature women’s empowerment.

Hidden Figures (2016)

Ever since coming out in 2016, the movie, Hidden Figures, has made a significant impact on society and the film industry. Based on real events, the movie follows a team of African-American women who served a crucial role in NASA’s early space program by using their intellect to make one of America’s greatest achievements in space. Bombshell (2019)

Another movie that follows smart and ambitious women, Bombshell features three females who anchored on one of the most powerful news networks in America. The film tags along with these women as they set out to expose the man who made them famous. This bold motion picture is available to either rent or buy on Amazon.

The Color Purple (2023)

The Color Purple is a musical period drama that is reimagined from the classic of 1985 which starred Whoopi Goldberg. The new adaptation follows a young woman’s journey to independence as she goes through hardships and forms unbreakable bonds. The sentimental coming-of-age movie can be seen exclusively on Max with a subscription, or rent or buy on Amazon.

Orange is the New Black (2013)

Orange is the New Black is an American comedy-drama series that follows the story of a woman who winds up in a minimum-security women’s prison in Connecticut. With seven seasons, the show focuses on women’s stories while addressing many issues in today’s society, such as race, gender, sexuality, and more. The diverse and cutting-edge TV series can be watched with a subscription on Netflix.

GLOW (2019)

Another comedy-drama series, GLOW revolves around the life of an out-of-work actress in L.A. in the 80s. Finally jumpstarting her career, she finds herself in the world of women’s wrestling alongside several other females trying to have a breakthrough in the industry. The three seasons of GLOW can be watched on Netflix.

The Queen’s Gambit (2020)

The Queen’s Gambit is a limited series that follows a young girl’s path to stardom in the 1950s as she reveals her talent for chess. She must prove herself as she makes her way to the top, all while struggling with addiction. This empowering miniseries can be watched with a subscription on Netflix.

Lady Bird (2017)

If you loved movies like Little Women and the widely renowned Barbie movie, then you may want to add this film to your watch list. The coming-of-age film directed by Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird, focuses on a high school senior and her bumpy relationship with her mother. Follow the deeply-opinionated women as they find their way through adolescence and adulthood by either renting or buying on Amazon.

Birds of Prey (2020)

The action-comedy movie, Birds of Prey, revolves around Harley Quinn’s journey to independence after her breakup with the Joker puts a target on her back. After befriending and teaming up with three other deadly women, Harley Quinn finds herself in the midst of a battle in order to save a young girl from an evil crime boss. A League of Their Own (1992)

Tom Hanks, Madonna, and Geena Davis star in this comedy classic. A League of Their Own is about a professional all-female baseball league created during World War II. Based on a true story of revolutionary women who found a love for the sport, this movie is available to rent or buy on Prime Video, or can be streamed on Peacock with a subscription.

Legally Blonde (2001)

After being dumped for being too “blonde,” sorority girl Elle Woods follows her now ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law school and discovers she’s not as ditsy as others may think. Legally Blonde, although a romantic comedy, shows women that they really can do anything they put their minds to if they want it enough. The captivating and optimistic film can be streamed on Max with a subscription, or is available to rent or buy on Prime Video.
