New York Fashion Week starts tomorrow, and Helmut Lang is the first runway show of this season!
Showing at 2pm on September 8th, Helmut Lang has always been known for being simple, yet slightly futuristic, and ahead of the times in its design. Like last Fall/Winter show, it was all about “utility” clothing, featuring their archived Cowboy collection from 2004. The result was a modern take on simple yet sophisticated workwear, with a mixture of mixed material such as leather, silk, and knits; Timeless, as if they already knew that the “Quiet Luxury” trend was coming.
The brand is also responsible for NYFW as we know it. In the late 1990s, Helmut Lang showed his collection off-schedule in NYC, much earlier than the November NYFW schedule, and even earlier than the ones in the other fashion cities. This encouraged other domestic designers to do the same, and thus NYC is the first runner of “the big four” fashion weeks today. Furthermore, the house was the first to livestream its collection via Internet as early as 1997.
After the much admired Helmut Lang himself retired from the label in 2005, the brand rebranded a few times with a series of creative direction changes. However, some might say that it had never pleased Mr. Lang’s original clientele the way he had. This time around, there is much anticipation with the debut of new creative director Peter Do, who was appointed to the position earlier this year. The Vietnamese designer has quite a resume to show: He is an FIT graduate, a recipient of the inaugural 2014 LVMH Graduate Prize, worked along side Phoebe Philo at Céline, and then at Dreck Lam. In 2018, he launched his own brand, PETER DO.
