Sofia Coppola’s long-awaited film Priscilla finally hit theaters on November 3. The film chronicles the illustrious relationship between the rock-and-roll legend Elvis Presley and his young wife Priscilla, told exclusively from her point of view.
The material comes from Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, where she candidly details her and Elvis’ 13-year relationship. Both the memoir and film shed light on the couple’s controversial age gap, as Priscilla was only 14 when Elvis first began courting her as a 24-year-old.
Costume designer Stacey Battat, who also worked with Coppola on films The Bling Ring and Beguiled, was in charge of bringing the couple’s signature looks to life. Battat was driven by a dedication to historical accuracy, relying heavily on old photographs and home movies. Check out the most fascinating Priscilla looks below.
Priscilla in Her Youth
The costume choices in Priscilla are based largely on the titular character’s internal and external transformations, from a smitten 14-year-old schoolgirl to a 28-year-old icon. For the scenes portraying Priscilla as a young girl, Battat dressed actress Cailee Spaeny in looser, more conservative clothing to reflect Priscilla’s innocence. Her locket is inspired by one the real Priscilla wore with a picture of her father inside. You can get one for yourself from J. Hannah Jewelry, who, in conjunction with A24, created their own reinterpretation.
Priscilla and Elvis’ Wedding Day
For the recreation of this iconic event, Battat had Chanel create a custom wedding gown complete with lace detailing, a veil, and a tiara. Jacob Elordi as Elvis was dressed in a custom Valentino tuxedo. By this point in their relationship, under Elvis’ direction, Priscilla had her signature black bouffant hairstyle and thick eye makeup, done by makeup and hair lead Cliona Furey. During this time period, Priscilla begins wearing higher heels and tighter clothing to reflect her maturity.
Home in Graceland
This look is a recreation of Priscilla and Elvis’ iconic photoshoot in their Graceland home. Here, Priscilla and Elvis are nearing the end of their marriage, hinted at by their vastly different style choices. Priscilla returns to her natural brown hair and minimal makeup, while Elvis is arguably over-the-top with his sideburns and jumpsuit. He is no longer dictating how Priscilla dresses, so she is able to find her own style. The couple would separate only a few years later.
