Just two hours south of Los Angeles, the coastal city of San Diego in Southern California is known for its stunning beaches and gorgeous weather, perfect for an upcoming vacation this summer. An idyllic, relaxed town with various things to do, there’s no better way to chill out than by spending a weekend here. To help out with your travels, here are a few things to do in the sunny city of San Diego.

Go to the Beach

One can’t go to a place famous for its beaches without going to at least one! You can walk alongside the renowned La Jolla Cove, popular among tourists and filled with plenty of beaches, reefs, and spots to watch the many seals that rest along the shoreline. For more hidden gems, check out Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach, Swami’s Beach in Encinitas, and Torrey Pines State Beach in La Jolla. There’s no shortage of activities one can enjoy at a beach in San Diego, too. Many are popular places for surfing, and some even have options for kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and even whale watching.

Walk Around Balboa Park

A unique historic and urban cultural park minutes from downtown San Diego, Balboa Park boasts 18 museums and several beautiful botanical gardens, including the Japanese Friendship Garden, perfect for cherry blossom season, and the Alcazar Garden. In addition, the park features stunning architecture that reflects the rich history of the location, as well as several exhibitions, installations, shops, and theaters. The park also hosts many cultural events throughout the year, making Balboa Park a must-see for anybody visiting San Diego.

Home to MLB team the San Diego Padres, their stadium Petco Park has been consistently rated USA Today’s number one ballpark, and for good reason! Located on the edge of downtown and sitting next to the convention center, Petco Park is adjacent to the city’s historic Gaslamp Quarter and gives views of both the San Diego skyline and the water, the perfect view for both coastal and urban lovers. Incorporating landmark elements such as using the old Western Metal Supply Co. warehouse as a ballpark landmark and serving top-tier food, there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than watching America’s favorite pastime.

Eat at the Historic Gaslamp Quarter

A lively neighborhood in downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter is known for its nightlife and many independent restaurants. In this historic village, you can find nearly every type of cuisine, from sidewalk dining to rooftop lounges. Many bars and restaurants also serve San Diego’s famous craft beer, making Gaslamp Quarter an all-time favorite dining location and a place to enjoy a good drink.

Explore the San Diego Zoo

One of the largest zoological institutes in the world, the renowned San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park and hosts more than 800 species of creatures. With a tour bus that covers more than three-fourths of the park and a skylift offering stunning views of the park and the city, the San Diego Zoo is where one can spend hours exploring the many habitats and animals housed there. Adjacent to the zoo is the San Diego Safari Park, located about 40 minutes north, which allows visitors to witness animals in their natural habitats while observing them from a tram.
