Cortisol is the primary stress hormone in the body. It is a steroid hormone that is produced and released by the adrenal glands. When you experience any type of stress, your body releases this hormone. These cortisol levels in your body can effect your mood, weight, blood pressure, glucose levels, and more.
For instance, high cortisol levels can cause weight gain and bloating, fatigue, increased blood pressure, headaches, and anxiety or depression. High levels of cortisol can also lead to a weakened immune system, inflammation, and other health issues. However, if your cortisol levels are too low, then your mood, appetite, energy levels, and cognitive abilities can be significantly impacted. Other serious health issues can occur as well from below-normal cortisol levels, such as low blood pressure.
So, it is best to manage your cortisol levels and try to keep them as normal as possible for your overall health. There are many natural, simple ways to maintain or get your cortisol levels back to normal:
Getting Sleep
Not sleeping enough can increase your cortisol levels, so it is important to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep. Many people turn to caffeine rather than getting the correct amount of rest. Although caffeine may boost your energy, it does not last and it also can contribute to an unhealthy raise in cortisol levels. You need to allow your body the time it deserves to rest so that you will feel refreshed the next morning and ready to start your day.
Exercise
Exercising regularly can help balance your cortisol levels and boost your overall mood by producing endorphins. It is recommended to get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. However, do not over work your body, so you can split up the 150 minutes throughout your week any way you would like.
Participating in Hobbies
Participating in hobbies that you enjoy can help reduce your stress and calm you by distracting you from any stressful thoughts you may have. Writing in a journal, painting, and hiking are just some examples of the many activities you may like to indulge in.
Maintaining a Healthy Diet
Eating any types of food is completely okay, as long as it is in moderation. It is important to be mindful of what you are putting in your body, as diets that have high sugar and saturated fat intakes lead to high cortisol levels. Making sure to stay hydrated and incorporate fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet will not only manage cortisol levels, but improve your gut health as well.
Taking Supplements
There are many natural supplements you can take in order to manage cortisol levels. Vitamin C, magnesium, ashwagandha, and omega-3 fatty acid supplements like fish oil are all supplements that aid in reducing stress and cortisol levels in the body.
Maintaining healthy relationships, having fun, and taking care of a pet are some other things that can reduce stress levels. Although many of us have busy schedules, which may contribute to high stress levels, all of these things listed are beneficial to your overall health. It is always so important to take care of yourself to make sure you are the best you can possibly be!
