Atelier Ndigo Celebrates African-American Women from Backstage to Runway

Atelier Ndigo presented its Spring 2024 collection “Fanm Creole” on Sunday, September 10 at Spring Studios. The show made enormous strides in the fashion industry by using all African-American models of varying skin tones, representing Black and African women in a way that is rarely seen elsewhere.

Founder Waïna Chancy is an African-American creative director for the brand, and beauty and nails were done by Black stylists backstage, resulting in genuine diversity and representation that is much-needed in the industry.

Cobalt blue was the main theme of makeup and nails, inspired by the ocean surrounding the island of Haiti. Makeup was minimal except for a striking cobalt blue eye, as the designers were moved by bold colors and geometrical shapes. The look added vibrancy while accentuating the models’ natural beauty.

“We used a really gorgeous cobalt blue pencil, and we made a rounded wing. We kept the skin really fresh and dewy and beautiful and sculpted. We wanted to keep them natural, but we just wanted to give them a little pop,” said lead makeup artist T. Cooper.

Similarly, lead manicurist Joelle Rodriguez used Essie 772 “Butler Please” on the nails, keeping it simple while adding that pop of bright color.
