Let the Awards Show Race Begin

As a self-proclaimed film buff and lover of all things entertainment, award show season is my own personal Super Bowl. Twenty Twenty Three was a great year for movies and shows, so there are a ton of contenders for the upcoming Golden Globes (January 7) and Oscars (March 10). Check out the movies and shows I can’t wait to see this awards season!

Barbie

After the cultural phenomenon that was Barbiemania, it’s no surprise Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is a huge contender for Best Picture. As of now, it has been nominated for Best Picture, Musical, or Comedy, Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling as Ken), and Best Performance by an Actress (Margot Robbie as Barbie) for the Golden Globes. We can assume it will be nominated for the Oscars, too. If you live under a rock and haven’t seen Barbie yet, you should get caught up.

Poor Things

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is a fantasy/sci-fi film that follows the journey of Bella Baxter, who is brought back to life after a mad scientist implants a baby’s brain into her adult body. It’s a fantastical, bizarre film with themes of feminism, equality, and liberation. This film has an amazing cast with Emma Stone playing the lead and both Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles. It is currently nominated at the Golden Globes for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actress (Emma Stone as Bella Baxter), and Best Supporting Actor for both Dafoe and Ruffalo’s performances.

May December

Director Todd Haynes’ May December follows Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) as she visits the home of married couple Joe and Gracie (Charles Melton and Julianne Moore) to do research for a film about the couple’s scandalous tabloid romance years prior. It has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actress (Natalie Portman as Elizabeth), and Best Supporting Actor/Actress for Melton and Moore’s performances. Given its critical praise, we can expect to see this movie nominated for multiple Oscars as well.

Saltburn

Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn has been everywhere lately and seems to be labeled as controversial due to its dark and sexual content. Saltburn is a dark comedy and psychological thriller about awkward college student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), who visits the estate of his eccentric classmate, Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi) for the summer. Saltburn is currently nominated for two Golden Globes: Barry Keoghan for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, and Rosamund Pike for Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture. Keep an eye out for Saltburn, as I’m sure it’ll make a big splash at the Oscars.

The Crown

The Crown has been running for 8 years on Netflix and tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign. The Crown is nominated for 4 Golden Globes: Best Television Series, Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama, Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama, and Best Supporting Actress, Television. The show is also nominated for six Emmys, which you can watch on January 15.

What were your favorite movies and shows this year?
