London’s Festive Wonderland: The Best Christmas and New Year Activities in 2023

Regent Street, Sloane Square, and Carnaby are already illuminated and for the holiday season, London is transforming into a magical wonderland, with many merry activities to get you in the holiday spirit. It’s one of my favorite times of year in London, and not only are there lots of things to see and do, but London’s restaurants pull out their very best menus too. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, London offers a plethora of enchanting experiences to make your Christmas and New Year celebrations truly memorable in 2023.

Festive Activities

  1. Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park:

This is Hyde Park’s iconic festive extravaganza. From thrilling rides and charming market stalls to ice skating and live entertainment, this magical event has something for everyone. The highlight is the observation wheel, offering breathtaking views of London’s winter skyline. It’s busy, but if you love a festive fair, this will tick all the boxes. Get your tickets in advance!

  1. Christmas Lights Tour:

Take a stroll or hop on a Christmas lights tour bus to witness London’s dazzling festive illuminations. From the iconic Regent Street, where all the luxury brands create beautiful festive window displays, to Marylebone’s quaint highstreet, the city’s streets come alive with a spectacular display of lights, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

  1. Ice Skating at Somerset House:

Glide into the holiday spirit at Somerset House where every year there’s an ice rink situated in the grand courtyard of the House. Surrounded by stunning architecture and twinkling lights, this experience combines festive fun with a touch of elegance. There are also some lovely riverside bars along here, as well as the dazzling Southbank just over the bridge.

  1. West End Shows:

London’s theatres come alive with special Christmas performances, offering a little bit of everything from classic productions to heartwarming holiday-themed plays. Book your tickets early to secure a seat at one of these unforgettable performances. Top tip – if you fancy some cheap seats, wait until the day of the show and visit one of the vendors near Trafalgar Square for any last-minute availability.

  1. Christmas Markets:

London does Christmas markets very well. From November onwards there are bigger markets around the central areas, but further out in all directions – Putney, Brixton, Shoreditch, Dulwich, and Peckham, you’ll find lots of little weekend markets that support small businesses. It’s perfect for finding unique gifts, and handcrafted decorations, not to mention the opportunity to indulge in festive treats. The Southbank Centre Winter Market and the Christmas by the River market at London Bridge are two of the biggest ones you’ll find centrally.

  1. New Year’s Eve Fireworks at the Thames:

Bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one with a bang at the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display along the Thames. Places like Galvin at Windows in the Shard, the London Eye, or even the upper floors of hotels like the Corinthia are good places to see the full show. These can be pretty pricey, so you could also bundle up and head to Primrose Hill with some blankets and hot toddies to see them from afar.

7. Countdown at Trafalgar Square:

Join the crowds at Trafalgar Square for a lively New Year’s Eve countdown. Enjoy live music, street performances, and the festive atmosphere as you welcome the arrival of the new year surrounded by London’s historic landmarks.

8. River Thames Cruises:

Many companies offer special New Year’s packages with dinner, music, and front-row seats to the spectacular fireworks show, which make for an unforgettable start to the year whether you’re local or a visitor.

December Eats

  1. Pastaio, Carnaby:

Known for their fresh pasta made in-house, enjoy a cozy and festive dining experience with dishes that showcase the warmth and richness of Italian cuisine. I visited this month just as the festive menu launched of burrata with brussels, and a hearty white wine sausage and fennel ragu, both recommended by the server, and it was *chef’s kiss*

  1. Dishoom, Carnaby:

Transport yourself to the bustling streets of Bombay at Dishoom in Carnaby. Tucked away under the glittering lights of Carnaby Street, Dishoom brings the magic of Indian cuisine with a festive twist, incorporating elements of British Christmas dinner with the flavors of India.

  1. The Ivy, any of them:

For an elegant and festive dining experience, choose any of The Ivy locations scattered across London. Renowned for its timeless charm and varied menu, The Ivy offers a combination of classic dishes with a touch of seasonal flair. Our Founder Ikponmwosa recently visited the Tower Bridge location and raved about the Shepherd’s Pie.

  1. The Cadogan Arms, Chelsea:

With an inviting ambiance and a menu that reflects British culinary excellence, this charming, very British pub is an ideal spot for a cozy December meal. From hearty roasts to comforting desserts, indulge in the best of seasonal British fare.

  1. Riding House Cafe, Fitzrovia:

Whether you’re in the mood for brunch, lunch, or dinner, Riding House Cafe’s festive offerings are sure to hit the spot with their delicious, comforting food. I love the breakfast and brunch menus at the Fitzrovia location which is a good place to fuel up before a day of Christmas shopping and activities.

  1. Bancone, Charing Cross:

This is one of my top 5 Italian restaurants in London (and that’s saying something!) A simple, yet contemporary Italian menu, Bancone’s chefs combine seasonal ingredients with the freshest of homemade pasta. I recommend absolutely everything on the menu paired with a couple of Negronis.

  1. The Laundry, Brixton:

A trendy spot in the south of London, The Laundry offers a festive menu that reflects the color and diversity of the Brixton neighborhood. I love how vibrant Brixton is at any time of year, but December is a great time to visit; The Laundry’s menu has some fab globally-inspired dishes and festive cocktails.

  1. Granary Square Brasserie, Kings Cross:

This stylish brasserie offers a menu that combines classic British dishes with a contemporary twist. With its low-lit, grand interiors and a menu full of seasonal delights, it’s also just around the corner from Coal Drops Yard so this is the perfect post-Christmas shopping spot in London.

London’s festive atmosphere brings holiday joy in great measure. Whether you’re enchanted by glittering lights, captivated by theatrical performances, or seeking a front-row seat to the fireworks, my capital city has something to offer for everyone.

XOXO,

Your Fashion Bestie
