NYFW: Backstage at The Green Show at Fashion Week

Making their NYFW debut, The Green Show is an annual event that showcases designers and promotes eco-conscious and sustainable fashion. This year’s designer at The Green Show was mother and daughter pair Najla and Cynthia Burta of Dur Doux, a brand based in Washington DC.

Dur Doux‘s new Spring 2024 collection is called, “Sous-Marine,” meaning “underwater” in French. “We were really inspired by the ocean and all of the marine life and plant life that lives there,” said Najla, Cynthia’s daughter. “What you’ll see here in this collection is indicative of the underwater life: coral reefs, you have fish, you have netting; you have all of these different types of textures and colors that you would see underwater.”

All of the fabrics used by Dur Doux are made sustainably. “We just personally, ethically, spiritually, feel a deep concern around the ecosystem,” said Cynthia. “We’re just feeling it very, very intensely, and we decided to make a philosophical commitment as designers to step into sustainability, to really and truly as we create, as we make choices about fabric, as we work with people, we are always thinking about that and we’re always decision making around that.” Collaborating with jewelry, hair, makeup, and nails, here’s what happened behind the scenes at The Green Show.

Jewelry

Najla and Cynthia collaborated with neighboring DC designer Sophie Blake of Sophie Blake NYC to create the jewelry for their designs. This will be Blake’s fourth time collaborating with Dur Doux. “When I connected with Najla and Cynthia, I really loved their brand,” she said. “I loved what they stood for. I loved that it was woman-owned, mother and daughter owned.”

Blake’s jewelry for this season is a mix of silver and gold, with a hint of iridescent pearls and elements of underwater findings. “We wanted to make it feminine, but very modern aesthetic, very clean lines. We wanted the focus to be the duality between structured and soft looks, and so I incorporated pearls,” Blake said. “I also did two necklaces in the collection that have natural coral in them. One of the chains we have in the collection resembles a puka shell.”

Hair

Hair stylist Diego Miranda has worked NYFW for years. He works closely with the Unite brand for his hair tools. “It’s an amazing product, it’s very very versatile and just performs as it needs to,” he said. “So the main product today is going to be the Smooth and Shine, to just give a lot of shine through the hair, and a lot of Maxcontrol hairspray because the hair needs to stay for hours and hours and hours between the fitting and walking.”

Miranda has worked with the makeup team before. “I already had a consultation with the makeup on the hair fitting. It’s just a collaboration between the designer, the makeup, and myself,” he said.

Makeup

Makeup artist Romana Lai collaborated closely with Najla and Cynthia when deciding the color palette for the looks this season. “We decided the makeup is really like a spring kind of look and a lot of pink,” she said. In addition to adding the pinks, Lai opted for a more natural look with light coverage foundation. While full coverage foundation was in trend a few years ago, nowadays the focus is on embracing natural skin instead of covering it.

Lai also shared her experience working with Miranda and his team once again. “It’s always really fun to work with them. [It’s] always good to work with someone you’ve already worked with before. You understand what to expect,” she said. “I’m really happy to work with them again, and it’s really interesting.”

Nails

Najla and Cynthia chose to work with Yukie Natori New York for their nails this season. “I just try to imagine [the nails] with the jewelry or their makeup,” a nail artist for YNNY said. “I use some simple colors, like a white-gray. Ideally, I don’t want to do the regular French manicure because their accent is pink this time. ”

The most important aspect for YNNY during this event was the teamwork. The group of girls work closely together, often collaborating with each other and helping one another out. “New York has a lot of layers that are here, but I think that only we can do a strong teamwork,” the nail artist said.
