This Blush Started a TikTok War

Who knew a blush could cause so much contention? I was randomly scrolling through TikTok, when I became inundated with videos from the beauty community discussing an extremely pigmented liquid blush by Juvia’s Place. While going down my normal TikTok rabbit hole, I began to see several creators with deep complexions frustrated by negative reviews of the blush by their fair skinned counterparts.

This was my first time ever hearing about the controversial product, so of course I had to get the tea (inserts loud tongue pop). After doing some investigating, I saw how it all began. Recently, there have been several videos from non-POC creators with less than favorable opinions about the Juvia’s Place Blushed Liquid Blush. The most consistent complaint has been that the blushes are far too pigmented for their light skin. In the TikToks, the more they try to blend the blush out, the further it spreads, and the worse it looked (not gonna lie, it did get pretty scary on a few of them!) Over 16.2M TikTokers watched creator, Paige Marcum, try the Juvia place liquid blush and fail miserably.

A lot of beauty creators of color have not taken kindly to these negative reviews regarding the blush. They were happy that a cosmetics brand finally addressed their long-standing grievances above blushes being too light to show up on their skin, or giving them an ashy appearance. These creators praised Juvia’s Place for their inclusivity. TikToker, CAKEFACERJ, did a tutorial with the blush, and it worked beautifully. In her video, she stated that a little bit goes along way, and it’s best to simply build up the coverage slowly. There were also non-POC creators who stood in solidarity with support for Juvia Place making such pigmented blushes, with statements like, “it not for you” and “they already make every other beauty product for us”.

What I found surprising, was that the 12 shade blush collection is not a brand new launch; the product has been out for about a year! TikToker, Kristin Jasmine, stated in her video “these blushes have been out for almost a year now, why are we still having this discussion?” Personally, I think it’s great that deeper complexions were taken into consideration when formulating this product. The goal is for beauty to be inclusive, right?

Have you tried the viral Juvia’s Place liquid blush, or do you intend to try it? I really want to hear your thoughts, besties.

XOXO,

Your Fashion Bestie
